Premier League: Liverpool's Unbeaten Run End With 2-1 Defeat To Manchester City
Liverpool are no longer in a comfortable table lead as their unbeaten run ended with 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Thursday.
City's manager Pep Guardiola had warned his players after winning 3-1 at Southampton, that anything lesser than victory in today's match would forfiet their chances in table lead to Liverpool.
That warning yielded result for City and culminated in Reds suffering their first after winning 20 consecutive matches. In effect, it reduces Jurgen Klopp's team's lead to four points as City move close in second position.
In the first half, Sadio Mane came close to putting Reds in the lead, but ball hit the bar and City's John Stones cleared it to safety. Sergio Aguero later opened the scoring for City with a left footed shot in 40th minutes.
Roberto Frimino equalised the lead for Reds in the second half, and minutes later Leroy Sane scored the much needed winning goal for City.
Raheem Sterling inspired the winning goal setying off Leroy Sane with pass and he powered a left footed shot home for the victory over Liverpool in 72nd minutes.
"I am proud of them, but not just today," says Pep Guardiola "All credit of these incredible players. That is how we have to pkah in the Champions League...I don't remember a league so tough, there are so many huge contenders fighting for the title. Every game is a final."
