Australian Open 2019: Stafenos Tsitsipas Ousts Roger Federer As Rafael Nadal Reaches Quarter-Final
Stefanos Tsitsipas stunningly stopped Roger Federer from progressing into the quarter-final in his bid for his seventh title, but Spaniard veteran Rafael Nadal swept through fourth-round match against Tomas Berdych in Melbourne Park on Sunday.
No doubt, the fourth round match was the biggest career win for Stefanos who rallied to win on his first career meeting with the former world no. 1. As a result, he becomes the youngest player ever to plaing the quarter-finals of the Australian Open since 2015 - the feat was previously held by Aussie veteran Nick Kyrgios.
The Greek player, 20, battled through saving 12 break points and serving 20 aces (Federer saved 12) and knocked the world no. 3 out of the tournament in four sets 6-7(11), 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-6(5).
World no. 15, Tsitsipas, in a post-match interview described the match victory over Federer as an emotional moment that holds "something really big" for his career and gladly said he felt joyous about it.
"That moment is definitely something I will never, ever, ever forget," says Federer "This match point is going to stay, I'm pretty much sure, forever, for the rest of my life."
In another draw, world no. 2, Nadal, easily breezed through the fourth round thrashing Berdych in straight set 6-0, 6-1, 7-6(4) in his bid for his second Australian Open title.
The Spaniard will take on Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-final and Tsitsipas will meet Roberto Bautista-Agut who ousted Marin Cilic in a hard-fought fourth match after five sets 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2,4-6,6-4.
