Australian Open 2019: Rafael Nadal Beats Matthew Abden To Reach Third Round
Rafael Nadal eased through second round match with Aussie Matthew Abden winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Abden could not sustain his tenacity against Spaniard's forehand shots, failing to convert breaking chances that could have kept in the game longer on his second meetings with the world no. 2 since 2011 at Fever-Tree Championship.
However, Nadal converted five break points during the match to breeze through for his 259th career match victory in a Grand Slam tournament in his bid for his second title in Melbourne Park since 2009. He has reached the final on three occasions and loss to Roger Federer twice (2012, 2017) and one-time to Stan Wawrinka (2014).
"It's been a very positive victory for me," says Nadal "I started a little bit slow, especially on the return side, and i think my serving was good from the beginning. Then I saved that game at 3-3 (in the opening set)."
In the next round, Nadal will meet Alex de Minaur. The Australian survived a scare from Henri Laaksonen to reach the third round.
