Australian Open 2019: Novak Djokovic Survives Daniil Medvedev Test To Reach Quarter-finals
Daniil Medvedev could not stop Novak Djokovic in the fourth round and has exited the event after losing in four sets by 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 to the world no. 1 who is set for his seventh title in Melbourne Park.
The six-time titlist was put to test by the Russian who after losing the opening set, rallied from 4-1 in the second set winning three straight games to level 4-4 and snapped the set after a tie-break when Djokovic netted a forehand shot.
The Serb became very ageessive in the third set, wearing out the world no. 15 by winning five straight games and converting three break points to be in the lead by 5-2 and served an ace to win the set.
Medvedev was not any way better in the deciding set against the Serb who swept through to wrap the match up to book his place in the quarter-finals.
"Even though it was three sets to one, it seems like a five-set match, really. It was draining physically a lot," says Djokovic "It was hard to go through him [Daniil]. It was kind of a cat-and-a-mouse game for most of the match. That's why it was so lengthy."
Djokovic is set to be the first player ever to claim seventh title in Melbourne Park but to get there he will face Japanese Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.
