Australian Open 2019: Karolina Pliskova Ousts Serena Williams To Reach Semi-final
Serena Williams' bid for to tie Margaret Court's record for all-title most Grand Slam winner has been interrupted after losing to Czech player Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
After winning the opener, Pliskova was overpowered by the seven-time titlist who on a rallied snapped the second set, and was in the lead by 1-5 in the deciding set when the seventh seed fired up her momentum and won straight six games to emerge as the in three-set by 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
"She was hitting lines and went crazy. Sheplayed unbelievable on match points," say Serena who had an ankle injury in the deciding set "It was nothing to do with my ankle. Obviously I made some mistakes but she played really well."
Pliskova will face in the semi-final 2018 US Open champion Naomi Osaka who defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets by 6-4, 6-1.
