ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic Reclaims World No. 1 After Two Years
After a period of battling with elbow injury and nosediving in rankings, Novak Djokovic remarkable recovery afterwards has earned him the top spot of the ATP Rankings for the first time in two years.
The 31-year-old regained the spot for the fourth time in his career and so far this season, has won four titles - Wimbledon, Cincinnati Open, US Open and Shanghai Open - to bring his single career titles to the total of 72.
In a statement from ATP Executive Chairman and President, Chris Kermode, the Serb's recovery from career low of no. 22nd in June to world no. 1, was described as "one of the great sporting comeback" recorded in the sport's history.
"It's been a phenomenal return to form that would have been hard to imagine just six months ago," says Kermode "He fully deserves his return to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings and should be incredibly proud of his exceptional season."
The world champion reached the final of Rolex Paris Masters on Sunday, but dropped his bid to winning his fifth title at the event to Karen Khachanov who won the final match in two sets 7-5 6-4 to win the title for the first time.
Recalling how reached the top spot of world rankings he says "Its's quite a phenomenal achievement. And, of course, I'm very happy and proud of it. Five months ago, if you told me that, I would be --I always believe in myself, but it was highly improbable at the time considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court."
