US Open 2018: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic Start Off On Winning Note
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have made it through opening round by eliminating their opponents Japanese Yoshihito Nishiota and Hungarian Marton Fucsovics at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Swiss had not much hassles knocking out the 22-year-old in straight sets by 6-2 6-2 6-4 as he bid for his sixth trophy at the tournament which he last won ten years ago.
Federer missed out on winning his 99th tour level title at the just concluded Cincinatti Open by losing Serb player Novak Djokovic who claimed his first ninth Masters 1000 title at all nine Masters tournaments to become first player ever reach the feat.
Speaking at a post-match interview, the 36 admitted to being anxious to come on the court saying "Thankfully I wasn't too nervous tonight. I felt good. I felt like I had a good preparation week. No hiccups there. I think that settles nerves there."
In another section of the draw of Tuesday, Novak Djokovic fought through health issues to defeat Marton Fucsovics in the opening round.
The two-time champion was forced to drop the second set by the Hungarian after cruising through the opening set. He picked up back on the momentum and dominated the deciding sets to eliminated the world no. 41 in four sets 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-0 after nearly three hours of play.
During the match, at the third set, the Cincinnati Open champion suffered stomach discomfort and was attended to by paramedics. After his recovery from depleting energy, he won the set and claimed all six games at the decider to reach the second round.
In the next round, Roger Federer will take on French player Benoit Paire as Djokovic will face American player Tennys Sandgren.
