Russia 2018 World Cup: Spain Manager Fernando Hierro Steps Down, Declines Returning To Former Role As Sports Director

Spain manager Fernando Hierro has stepped as the national team coach following their shock defeat to Russia on penalties.
The 50-year-old was appointed as replacement for Julen Lopetegui in just two days to the World Cup after Julen signed to a deal to be Real Madrid manager.
According to a statement released by Spain's football governing body RFEF, Hierro declined returning to his former role with body as its sports director and planned to seek "new professional challenges".
"After many kilometres of walking together, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro put an end to their relationship once the participation of Spain in the World Cup in Russia ended, " the RFEF statement read.
"The last Spanish coach declined to return to his previous position as sports director of the RFEF to seek new horizons and undertake new professional challenges."
Hierro, in a statement accepted blame for failing to lead the team to glory saying, "We all tried to give our best but that's football...There's a fine line between winning and losing."
