Russia 2018 World Cup: Diego Maradona Criticises Referee Mark Geiger Says Colombia Were Robbed For England
Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has come out to express his opinion on Colombia loss to England after a penalty shootout, suspected the officiating referee Mark Geiger has one to blame most because he robbed Colombia.
The former Barcelona star suspected Geiger of being bias because he should not have awarded a penalty to England, but should have had the tournament's top scorer Harry Kane penalised for foul play on Carlos Sanchez.
The 57-year-old in an interview with a Venezuela-based T station described Geiger as a "gentleman who decides" the fate of a match that he believed was too big for him.
"Here's a gentleman who decides, a referee who, if you Google him, shouldn't be given a match of this magnitude...Geiger, an American, what a coincidence," he said.
penalised for foul play on Carlos Sanchez.
Meanwhile, prior to the kicked off, he was spotted wearing the South American side's jersey. He also seeen celebrating when Yerry Mina equalised for Colombia in injury time which eventually dragged the game into shootout.
That comment from the football legend was condemned by the sport's governing body Fifa in a statement described the Argentine's comment on England and Colombia match as "entirely inappropriate" and one that is not right from a player of his status "who has written the history" of the sport.
"Fifa strongly rebukes the criticism of the performance of the match official which it considers to have been positive in a tough and highly emotional match," the body said.
