Stuttgart Open 2018: Roger Federer Beats Mischa Zverev After Dropping A Set On His Return To Grass-court
In spite of the opening set not going down well with Roger Federer, he yet snatched the round of the German Mischa Zverev and won in the first match at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.
The world no. 2 dropped the opener to the German who overtook the Swiss lead after four break chance using his serves to his advantage, before the Swiss came in strong into the game having found his rhythm and thrashed his opponent in two remaining sets to win by 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
It was obvious that there was a bit of rustiness in the Swiss player during the match, and for the first time dropped a set against Mischa in all their previous five ATP FedEx encounters.
Speaking after the match, Federer admitted to his slow start which he blamed on his three month break.
"Three months is a long time, it's longer than the year-end break. So, I'm very happy returning on good terms onto the Tour. It was difficult, missed some chances maybe in the first set...Then I found a way, I found my rhythm...I'm very happy with how I played," he says after the match.
He will face in his next match either Argentine Guido Pella or Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran.
