Russia 2018 World Cup: Edinson Cavani Nets Twice As Uruguay Eliminate Portugal
This will be hard for Portugal to swallow but it is what it is. as they have been knocked out of the tournament after a shock defeat (1-2) to Uruguay in the round of last 16.
The South Americans did not have much in ball possession as their opponents did, but they have one brilliant finisher, Edinson Cavani, in the front whose strikes sent the Portuguese home.
Early into the match, the 31-year-old Paris St-Germain's forward, Cavani, chested into the net a cross from Luis Suarez in 7th, and Portugal responded to the lead in the second half, equalizing through Pepe who headed in a cross from Raphael Guerreiro from the corner in 55th minutes.
Unfortunately for the Portugal, they were caught up in defensive error when a goal kick from Uruguay goalkeeper was headed to Rodrigo Bentancur who flicked the ball over Cavani on the far left and he curled a right-footed shot through for the winning goal in 62nd minutes.
Eventually, the match ended in favour of Uruguay and will face France in the quarter-finals on Friday July 6.
