Defending champion Alexander Zevrev put up a strong resilience against Rafael Nadal who fought through a tough match with the German to win his eighth Italian Open title.
The Spaniard who defeated Zevrev after topping three sets 6-1 1-6 6-3, regained his ATP No.1 World ranking which he lost to Roger Federer just days ago for his defeat to Dominic Thiem in the quarter finals of the Mutua Madrid Open.
Nadal had a comfortably one at the opening set, but the world no. 3 surpisely gained incredible momentum and switchly overrode the Spaniard at the second set, dragging the match into a decider.
At this time, the Spaniard's fate was hanging in the balance as the German quickly moved up in points leading by 2-3 before the game was suspended due to rain.
