Official Portraits Of President Obama And Fmr. First Michelle Unveiled At Smithsonian's National Art Gallery
The official portrait of the former President of the United States Mr Barack Obama, and that of the Former First Lady Mrs Michelle Obama, was unveiled at the National Art Gallery in Washington on Monday.
The official artwork of the former first couple was done by two foremost African American artists Kehinde Willey and Amy Sherald, who are known for having cultural statements in the artworks.
Kehinde is trained from the Yale University and his work is more about using the Old Master style of painting to bring out person of an African Americans in his artworks.
On the other hands, Sherald is known for making political statements in her artwork by the way she underscores the designated "colour" for black people by opting for gray instead.
Speaking at the ceremony, the former President Barack Obama praised Kehinde for good job done on the portrait saying, "How about that? That's pretty sharp."
He continued to say in joke "I tried to negotiate less grey hair and Kehinde artistic would not allow (me) to do what I said."
Also, the former First Michelle Obama in her speech at the ceremony described how "overwhelmed" she felt to see her official portrait did by Sherald.
"Was a little overwhelmed, to say the least," she said after her potrait was unveiled.
