Oscars Academy Disposes Harvey Weinstein Of His Position As Board Member
The governing body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has expelled one of it board members and former Weinstein Co. producer Harvey Weinstein from the body.
On Saturday, the academy’s 54-member board of governors at a meeting decided on the fate of the movie producer and a member alleged of sexual harassment, and it came out that 90% voted overwhelmingly on a decision to "immediately expel" him from the board.
In a statement released after the body's emergency session, it pointed out that the vote against the 65-year-old producer was more than the "required two-thirds majority” to effect a decision.
“We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues," the statement reads "but also to send a message that the era of wilful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behaviour and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society.”
The Academy's decision was following investigations carried out by The New York Times and The New Yorker which unravelled decade long sexual harassment and rape allegations levelled against it ousted member.
