It took the 28-year-old boxer 11 rounds to bring to defeat the former heavyweight title holder Klitschko in front of 90,000 audience.
The pairs had both went down on two different occasions as the 41-year-old landed his heavy old punch on Joshua that dropped him on the floor in fifth round.
It became undoubtedly a win for the Brit, having got the Ukrainian down twice in the 11th round with sledgehammer punches reaching the 41-year-old repeatedly.
The referee declared Klitscho has been knowckout as he appeared to have declined in stamina to fatigue after suffering unabated punches from Joshua before and after his falling in the 11th round.
In effect, Joshua added to the ranks of title his already holding the WBA world title having defeated the Klitscho.
