Euro 2024: Maximilian Wober's Own Goal Leads France Through Opening Game Against Austria

France secured a needed victory from a hard-fought match against Austria by 1-0 in the opening game of the Euro 2024 and are now second with three points behind the Netherlands (3 pts) in Group D.

Austria dropped behind their opponents when Kylian Mbappe's cross was deflected home with a header by Maximilian Wober in the latter stages of the first half.

The score line remained the same for the rest of the game amidst multiple chances from both sides and the loss have now snapped Austria's unbeaten run through seven games in all competitions. For France, they have remained unbeaten through six opening games in major competitions.

Overview

Austria gave their best for much of the time, but as the game would be, it went France's way. It was yet a commendable game for the French side even though the victory came off an own goal. Besides that, the game potentially would have ended in a draw.

Mbappe was really lucky with scoring in the game and he compensated for that for causing Wober's own goal. Plausible outing for N'Golo Kante who was all over the place, making good impact on the game for France. Ousmane Dembele had almost the same day as Mbappe as both players could not make most of chances made. Still, the victory was deserved but it was narrow getting past the Austrians.
